The 1990 classic · remastered for DirectX 12

Wing
Commander
RTX

3D ships, space in high dynamic range, a photoreal cockpit, the Sega CD cast's voices and live-action scenes, around the original game. Free. Installs from your own copy.

Same game. New eyes.

The missions, the wingmen, the Kilrathi and the pace are the 1990 game's own.

Wing Commander RTX runs Origin's original code and rebuilds everything you see and hear around it, at your screen's resolution and refresh rate.

What's new

Everything you remember, rebuilt.

01

Space in high dynamic range

The galaxy's band and far nebulae, WC1's planets and suns redrawn in high definition, nebula clouds you fly through, glowing lasers, and explosions as volumes of fire and smoke. The ships are 3D: CrustyBread's HD models and Origin's own Super Wing Commander models, with engine flames.

02

A photoreal cockpit

The Hornet, Rapier, Scimitar and Raptor in every view, with the game's own instruments live on the screens and the pilot's hand moving with the stick. The HUD's text, sights and radar are redrawn sharp at your resolution, from 4:3 to 32:9.

03

Voiced and filmed

The Sega CD version's cast speaks the bar, the briefings and the debriefings, line by line. The bar, the briefings, Halcyon's office, the medal ceremony and the barracks are live-action scenes, lip-synced to those voices; the cutscenes are films.

04

Smooth, and in your hands

Space at your display's refresh rate, 60 fps and up, while the game keeps its original speed. PS5 and Xbox controllers work as soon as they're plugged in; HOTAS, pedals and any joystick are set up in-game with F10.

Everything in it

Ships and space

  • Direct3D 12 renderer
  • 3D ship models in flight: CrustyBread's HD Rapier, Scimitar, Raptor, Drayman, Tiger's Claw, Dralthi, Krant, Jalthi and Snakeir; Origin's own Super Wing Commander models for every other ship and the missiles
  • Engine flames on the ships' exhausts; lit windows and lights on the Tiger's Claw, the Dralthi and the Snakeir
  • Each ship sized to match the original game's sprites, so ranges and targeting feel the same
  • Space in high dynamic range with bloom: glowing lasers, explosions and engines
  • A richer sky: the galaxy's band and far nebulae
  • WC1's planets, nebulae, galaxy and suns redrawn in high definition
  • Nebula clouds you fly through; ships inside take on their colour
  • Asteroids, mines, missiles and wreckage as 3D models, the asteroids and wreckage with 8K textures
  • Explosions as volumes of fire and smoke
  • The intro in real 3D across the whole screen

Cockpit, HUD and screens

  • A photoreal cockpit for the Hornet, Rapier, Scimitar and Raptor
  • Every view: front, left, right and rear
  • The game's own instruments live on the cockpit's screens
  • The pilot's hand moving with the stick
  • The HUD at full resolution: the displays' text, the gun sight, target brackets, lock marker and radar contacts redrawn sharp
  • Any screen shape: 4:3, 16:9 and ultra-wide up to 32:9, the cockpit and the 3D view carrying on past the old 4:3 frame
  • Window or full screen (Alt+Enter), any window size
  • Smooth flight at your display's refresh rate, 60 fps and up, with the game's original speed kept

Story, voices and music

  • The whole Vega campaign fully voiced by the Sega CD version's cast: 3,800 recordings, line by line, in the bar, the briefings and the debriefings
  • You're Blair, callsign Hotshot, as the actors say it
  • The bar as a live-action scene: Shotglass and the pilots lip-synced, the seats taken by whoever is really aboard
  • Briefings as live-action scenes with Colonel Halcyon; the map shots stay the game's own mission maps
  • Debriefings, Halcyon's office and the medal ceremony as live-action scenes
  • The barracks with a sleeping pilot in every bunk that holds a saved game
  • The medal case as a photograph of your jacket at your rank, with your ribbons and medals on it
  • The scramble as live-action video for each fighter
  • The cutscenes as films: the return to the Claw and the landing (your fighter clean or shot up), your death, the ejection, stranded, the funeral, the victory ending and the losing ending
  • New songs for the title, cruising and dogfights, with the original score everywhere else

Controls and install

  • PS5 and Xbox controllers with a full twin-stick layout, working as soon as they're plugged in
  • HOTAS, rudder pedals and any joystick, with defaults that just work
  • An in-game controls menu (F10): two controls per action, axes inverted, dead zones set, devices shown live
  • The 1990 two-button joystick mode, if you want it
  • Keyboard and mouse as in the original
  • Installs from your own Kilrathi Saga disc 1 image: every file checked, nothing mounted, no administrator rights, saved games kept

Not yet

  • DLSS
  • Voices for the Secret Missions (the Sega CD never had them)

Bring your own copy

How it installs

  1. 01

    Unzip and run

Unzip the folder anywhere (not inside the zip) and double-click Play Wing Commander RTX.exe. Windows may say it protected your PC because the game isn't signed: choose More info, then Run anyway.

  2. 02

Point it at your disc image

It asks for your Wing Commander: The Kilrathi Saga disc 1 as an .iso, checks every file, and copies the game's data out of it. Nothing is mounted and no administrator rights are needed. Have the CD? Make an .iso of disc 1 with any disc-imaging program first. No image, no install.

  3. 03

    Fly

At the title, start a new game. Alt+Enter switches between a window and full screen; F10 sets up joysticks, HOTAS and pedals. HOW TO PLAY.txt in the folder has every control.

You need

  • Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
  • A DirectX 12 graphics card: GeForce GTX 900, Radeon RX 400, Intel Arc or newer; 8 GB of video memory or more is best
  • About 4 GB of disk space
  • Your Kilrathi Saga disc 1 as an .iso
  • On a "Windows N" edition, Microsoft's Media Feature Pack, or the videos won't play

Questions

FAQ

Why do I need a disc image?

Wing Commander belongs to Electronic Arts. This download carries the remaster's own work and the ships' 3D models, but none of the 1990 game's own files: those come from your copy. The installer reads them straight out of your Kilrathi Saga disc 1 image.

Will the GOG or EA app version work?

No. The installer takes the Kilrathi Saga's disc 1 image only.

Does it cost anything?

No. It's a free fan project and will stay that way.

Is the game changed?

The missions, ships, AI and pace are the original's: the remaster runs the 1990 game's own logic and redraws what you see and hear around it.

Something went wrong. What should I send?

If it won't start or it crashes, the file bin\wc1-rtx-crash.txt (if there is one) and setup.log beside the launcher say what happened.

Thanks
